Required Certification Tickets
In Alberta there are 3 tickets available for the Ironworker Trade as a well as 1 for Welder, all 4 are considered COMPULSORY trades. This means that anyone who is working in these trades in the province of Alberta MUST be registered as an apprentice or hold a Journeyman ticket. The Ironworker and Welder tickets issued in Alberta are as follows:
- Ironworker (Generalist)
- This ticket is a combination of both Structural and Reinforcing
aspects of the trade. The apprenticeship is a 4 year term requiring 1500
hours worked in the field per year followed by 6 weeks of full time
technical training. Once complete the apprentice will write the Alberta
Journeyman exam and the Red Seal exam for the trade. Apprentice’s who
pass the provincial Journeyman exam but do not pass the Red Seal exam
can still be awarded an Alberta Journeyman ticket.
- Ironworker (Structural/Ornamental)
- This ticket covers Structural/Ornamental Ironwork only, those who
are indentured as a Structural/Ornamental apprentice or who hold a
Journeyman ticket are not permitted to work in the Reinforcing area of
the trade. This is a 3 year apprenticeship requiring 1500 hours worked
in the field per year followed by 6 weeks of full time technical
training. Once complete the apprentice will write the Alberta Journeyman
exam and the Red Seal exam for the trade. Apprentice’s who pass the
provincial Journeyman exam but do not pass the Red Seal exam can still
be awarded an Alberta Journeyman ticket.
- Ironworker (Reinforcing)
- This ticket covers Reinforcing Ironwork only, those who are
indentured as a Reinforcing apprentice or who hold a Journeyman ticket
is not permitted to work in the Structural/Ornamental area of the trade.
This is a 2 year apprenticeship requiring 1500 hours worked in the
field per year followed by 6 weeks of full time technical training. Once
complete the apprentice will write the Alberta Journeyman exam and the
Red Seal exam for the trade. Apprentice’s who pass the provincial
Journeyman exam but do not pass the Red Seal exam can still be awarded
an Alberta Journeyman ticket.
- Welder
- This ticket covers the trade of Welding only. This is a 3 year apprenticeship requiring 1500 hours worked in the field per year followed by 8 weeks of full time technical training. Once complete the apprentice will write the Alberta Journeyman exam and the Red Seal exam for the trade. Apprentice’s who pass the provincial Journeyman exam but do not pass the Red Seal exam can still be awarded an Alberta Journeyman ticket.
- Welders who have CWB certification only are not eligible to work as Welders
